Vatican's Ecumenical Council approves a declaration condemning anti Semitism and rejecting collective blame on Jews for Christ's crucifixion. The document omits the deicide term and calls for fraternal dialogue while asserting the spiritual bond between Christians and Jews. Vote totals show broad support despite significant opposition.
Maine faces a major draft call with 45 224 national quota reported from headquarters. Col Paul B Merrick says married men without children likely to be called by January as some states plan pre induction exams in November. The draft order favors delinquents volunteers single men and then childless married men ages 19 to 26.
The State Department will send a note to Fidel Castro to organize an orderly Cuban evacuation estimated at 30,000 to 50,000 to the United States. Havana proposes priorities and travel details while U.S. diplomats push for relatives and political prisoners to be first.
A National Labor Relations Board examiner ruled Lyn-Flex Industries Inc in Saco engaged in unfair labor practices and urged a new union election after the April 6 vote saw 68 against and 33 not voting or challenged. The company allegedly pressured workers, surveilled activity, and threatened consequences to discourage unionization. The plant at One Lehner Road manufactures shoe platforms and crepe soles.
South Vietnamese forces claimed 218 Viet Cong killed in two days in the Mekong Delta and Binh Duong with 95 miles southwest of Saigon. U.S. sources noted separate actions with 45 Viet Cong killed in the Suai Ca Valley offensive and 25 Viet Cong routed near Qui Nhon. A Vietnamese AP photographer was killed during the Mekong Delta battle.
Gov John H Reed congratulates John Roberts Inc of Biddeford on expanding with a 75 000 square foot factory at Biddeford Industrial Park. The project will add about 200 jobs doubling the current staff and includes a plant nursery for children of women workers.
Edgar R. Morin announces two new stores in the Mahaney Block Alfred Street Biddeford Morin's Quality Shoe Store and Morin's Pizzeria and Luncheonette will occupy about 4000 square feet. Planned features include wall to wall flooring fluorescent lighting parking for 30 cars and take out service. The shoe store will employ three full time and one part time workers with Ralph Lessard as manager.
