Bird Debris Seen as Cause in Wreck of Eastern Liner

Divers found feather remains near the salvaged Electra wreckage at Logan Airport and a large number of starling carcasses at the runway end. Investigators say turbulence or propeller injuries could have chewed up the birds, supporting the bird-strike theory. The 62 lives lost marked New England's worst aviation disaster, with 11 survivors. The latest fatality was 44 year old Justin Beauman of Reading, Pennsylvania.

Maine Man Is Detained In Russia

Mrs. Harvey C Bennett reports cautious relief over word that her husband and traveling companion Kaminsky may be detained in the Soviet Union for taking photographs. The men, 26 and 28, were due back Aug 25 from a Russia trip. a postcard dated Aug 19 reached Mrs. Bennett with no word since. State Department officials say an American tourist saw Kaminsky Aug 25 at a Czech border point and that both men are amateur photographers. The matter is being pursued with the Soviet Foreign Office.

Doctor Draft To Begin In Coming Fiscal Year

The Army Navy Air Force Journal predicts the Defense Department will draft up to 500 doctors in the next fiscal year. The move would revive a practice unused since February 1957 as shortages of interns and resident physicians persist. A quota final size will be decided after March 1 with no plans to draft dentists.

Teen-Age Murderers Sentenced to Electric Chair in New York

In Manhattan, judge Gerald Culkin sentenced two 16 and 17 year olds known as Dracula Agron and Umbrella Man Hernandez to death for the August 1959 stabbing murders of Robert Young and Anthony Krzesinski in a playground. Four accomplices received long prison terms. The victims, teens, were not involved in local gang feuds.
