Deep Sea Divers Aid After Maine Turnpike Bridge Crash

State and local police coordinated at the Saco river bridge scene after a truck crash on the Maine Turnpike left one unidentified man dead and possibly a woman missing. Deep sea divers from the Commander Service Force Atlantic Fleet assisted as a trailer hung over the edge and the cab lay in the water.

Biddeford Man Suffered Hit-and-Run Injury in Saco Parking Lot

Frank Lemieux, 21, of Alfred Street Biddeford, was reported resting comfortably at Webber Hospital after a suspected hit-and-run in Bagley’s parking lot in Saco last night. He told police a green Buick struck him, throwing him over a fence. driver fled and investigation continues.

Truck Plunges Into Saco River On Maine Turnpike

A New Brunswick registered trailer truck plunged into the Saco River between Biddeford and co this morning after losing control on the Maine Turnpike. An unidentified man died, and at least one other person, possibly a woman, was believed to be in the cab. State Police noted 450 feet of skid marks before the bridge and deep scratch marks on the left guard rail indicating a topple into the river.

Tractor plunges into water after bridge mishap near Saco

A tractor veered onto the railroad bed and dropped 25 feet into 12 feet of water after detaching from a flat-bed trailer suspended from a bridge. Motorist alerted Saco police at 2:54 a.m. State Police Trooper Ronald Hall responded, with Biddgford and Saco units, Civil Defense, and Coast Guardsmen aiding at the scene.

Evacuations Start In Drenched Northwest

Rain drenched the Pacific Northwest for the fifth straight day as Civil Defense units began evacuating farm families from lowlands northeast of Seattle near the Hamish River. Fifteen families moved to high land in Arlington after the Stillaguamish River spilled its dike. One death was reported from a rock slide triggered by the downpours. Weather extended across the nation with a warm trend, clouds from the Mississippi to New England, variable rainfall, and temperatures rising up to 20 degrees from 24 hours earlier.

Area Men Injured In Accident Near Traveler's Motel

Two men were treated for lac erations and bruises at Webber hospital and released after a crash near the Travelers Motel on the Portland road in Saco. David A. Grantham, 22, of Dayton, and Normand Arbour, 32, of Biddeford, were taken to hospital by Saco police after the car they rode in veered off course and struck a telephone pole. The driver, unnamed, apparently fell at the wheel as the heavily damaged vehicle came to rest.

Air Force Captain Sets Chute Record

Air Force Captain Joe Kittinger made a 15 mile parachute jump from 76 400 feet over White Sands New Mexico as part of space age experiments. He reached nearly 450 mph for about three minutes before a parachute opened and he drifted to the desert in six more minutes. He said he had no time to worry as he focused on collecting data for survival from space emergencies.

Maine Youths Becoming Parents Ahead of Youth Years

Augusta AP report cites Maine in 1957 with 7,878 marriages and 3,362 young women and 1,140 young men under 20 among 15,756 partners. It notes 146 marriages in 1955 involved at least one party under 16 and defends Aid to Dependent Children programs.
