President-elect John F Kennedy and Lyndon B Johnson head toward a deer hunting area from LBJ Ranch in Texas after a two hour pre inauguration talk. They are joined by supporters and Secret Service. Kennedy flew from Florida to Bergstrom then rode to the ranch.

Biddeford Twins Mark 75 Quietly Amid Illness

Twin sisters Lillian Wakefield and Lena Payhour, born 1885 in Biddeford, observe their 75th birthday. Illness keeps Payhour in Randall Hall Nursing Home and Wakefield at home on Elm Street. They worked at Pepperell Manufacturing and share family ties including one son and three grandchildren.

Ike Sends Naval Aid To Guatemala And Nicaragua

President Eisenhower ordered U S Navy warships and air units to aid Guatemala and Nicaragua against any communist directed attack if needed. The White House said ships including an aircraft carrier are on the high seas to carry out the mission following written requests from the two governments. Guatemala and Nicaragua have fought revolts they say are backed by Fidel Castro supporters.

Leopoldville authorities staged a large military parade to show the strength of Mobutu's pro Western regime with 2000 soldiers and 30000 civilians along Boulevard Albert. Mobutu saluted in full dress as UN and Western diplomats observed, while Lumumba backers and some officials boycotted.

Young Escapee Hunted in Cumberland County Jail Break

State police and sheriffs hunted for 18 year old Clifford Guptill of Portland after he and 25 year old Roger Hanna escaped from Cumberland County jail during recreation. Hanna was recaptured in Cumberland. Guptill was last seen near Gorham in a stolen Portland pickup. Hanna had pled guilty in Portland to escape and Guptill previously fled from a South Windham reform school.

The AP reports a major wood chip plant, the largest of its kind in the East, is expected to begin operations in Oakland by mid next month. The project marks a significant boost for regional industry and employment prospects.

Bell system demos near future home telephone control

AP reports in Morris New Jersey that a Bell Telephone System trial lets homes dial a sequence to route calls to visiting houses and new central office tech uses a photographic memory and transistor memory. By 1965 Bell Labs expects national rollout with 600 Morris users and possible later expansion. Teens’ calls can be held with a recorded message until the line frees. A third party may dial into ongoing conversations as new services unfold.

Dishwasher Admits Killing Three Women in Starved Rock Canyon

A sobbing dishwasher told authorities he killed the wives of three Chicago executives in Starved Rock State Park after a bungled purse snatching. Otis Weger led detectives through the canyon, reenacting the March killings of Lillian Oetting Mildred Lindquist and Frances Murphy, tying them and pursuing one who broke free, amid a wide eight month probe.

Drastic Cuts Imposed On US Foreign Spending

President Eisenhower ordered drastic curbs on overseas costs, aiming to save about a billion dollars yearly by bringing home 284,000 wives and children of U.S. servicemen abroad starting January. The plan accelerates a 15,000-month reduction, enforces a buy American policy, and seeks to rebalance the balance of payments while protecting the $18 billion gold reserve.
