Central Maine Snowstorm Paralyzes Roads. 12-Inch Totals

Much of Maine dug out as heavy storm blanketed coastal and central regions with up to 12 inches. Highways were blocked but crews opened most routes. travel remained hazardous. Bangor and Old Town reported 12 inches. Millinocket 6, Houston 5, Limestone 3, Caribou Eastport Greenville 2, Augusta 1.

Search Pressed For Missing Crewmen Near Bermuda

Rescue planes and ships hunted 18 missing crewmen from the Greek freighter Captain George northeast of Bermuda amid stormy seas. Seven survivors were picked up while 18 others disappeared after their lifeboat capsized. U S submarine Torsk and Coast Guard vessels joined the search as another schooner Curlew foundered nearby and was later towed to safety.
