In Biddeford Maine Democrats swept with large margins and record turnout as Kennedy and Coffin led across tickets. In Saco voters backed Kennedy Johnson Smith Oliver Nason Harvey Caouette Bedard while Oliver edged Garland after late ward reports, solidifying Democratic gains citywide.
Peter A. Garland, 37, four time mayor of Saco, defeats incumbent James C. Oliver to win Maine's First District congressionally. Garland ran as a conservative and carried York County for the first time since 1919. Oliver congratulated Garland and pledged cooperation in the transition. In a separate note, John F. Kennedy won the presidency, youngest ever and first Catholic, with 272 electoral votes as Nixon lagged.
York county Republicans hailed a record turnout as they swept five major county posts in yesterday’s election. Democrats lost three state senate seats county attorney and county commissioner posts. sheriff and probate register stayed with Democrats. Notable wins included Saco’s Peter Garland’s upset in the First district and John J. Harvey securing county attorney. Margaret Chase Smith led county candidates with 28,542 votes. Statewide, Kennedy-Johnson and Mrs. Smith won, Reed defeated by Coffin. Representativesto legislature listed with party and vote counts.
In a tight vote Kennebunk residents approved question one for a state liquor store 1291 to 910 and endorsed summer hotel liquor service 1211 to 796. Wells also favored the state store by 939 to 934 while many towns voted no on all liquor questions.
A humorous item notes a football fan unconcerned about the Notre Dame and Southern Methodist contest, with playful reference to a corporate source and generic football culture.
In a Republican triumph Maine voted all major offices GOP. Nixon carried the five electoral votes while Sen. Margaret Chase Smith Gov. John H. Reed and all three Republican congressional candidates won. Turnout topped 421,500, surpassing 1956 records and marking a historic combined presidential state election.
AUGUSTA AP John Hatha way Reed, a 39 year old farmer businessman, rose from near anonymity to lead a bid for governor. He portrayed himself as experienced and pledged progress based on long range budget ideas from 1961 to 1963 while avoiding specifics on tax funding. He framed Coffin as an opponent from the Democratic party, contrasting backgrounds and campaigns.
Michael Schoonjans an AFL-CIO TWUA director and Kennedy supporter received a cablegram from his godchild Jacqueline Coleman in Tourgoing France congratulating Mike and Kennedy on the landslide win. Early returns showed a Democratic tilt in Maine prompting Biddeford supporters to plan a City square celebration, though Mayor Clement Deschambault urged waiting for final results before celebrating.
Heavy turnout reported in Saco Ward 2 where 867 of 948 registered voters cast ballots yesterday leaving 81 nonvoters. Officials suggested turnout in other six wards was at least as strong. In Biddeford a voter split ticket Kennedy for president Lodge for vice president. Cub Scouts visited Ward 7 precinct at Bradbury Street School and learned voting processes under guidance of Joseph Woods and chaperones Jacqueline and Reynald Goulet.
