Nick Gillis A lifelong Biddeford bowling icon

Nick Gillis, a 50plus bowler and entrepreneur in Biddeford, Maine, recalls starting as a pinboy at Anton's alleys. He credits Billy Manning with refining his game, earned Maine singles titles, and, with wife Doris, became a Maine Hall of Fame husband and wife team and National Mixed Doubles champion. Now managing 20th Century Lanes, he laments pinboys but stays active, mentoring youth and adult leagues while defying age with a lifelong passion for bowling.

Hearst Declared Mentally Competent to Stand Trial

US District Court Judge Oliver Carter ruled Patricia Hearst is presently competent to aid in her defense in the Hi bernia Bank robbery case. He urged continued psychiatric treatment without delaying the trial. Hearst's lawyers seek private psychotherapy or transfer to a private hospital, while the judge noted no psychosis or serious mental defect. The ruling covers her April 15, 1974, holdup and 11 related state felony counts, with juror selection to proceed amid ongoing legal wrangling.

Saco Trotting Park in 1872 A Jolly Place

In summer 1872 Fair Week visitors at Beach Street’s Saco Trotting Park paid 25 cents admission and a dime for ale to enjoy freak shows games and races. The mile track with sharp turns favored pole positions and stars like Lonesome Ruben and Belle Gibbs dominated the era. Jotting lines capture reinsmen, close finishes, open gambling and spectators walking home dead broke after the races.

Saco Ward 3 recount set for Monday night

In Saco Ward 3, Democrat incumbent Van Piomiades and Republican Stephen Foss each hold 216 votes after a close Tuesday race. Indep candidates Letendre and Gaines trail with 157 and 90. A recount at City Hall will review 21 disputed ballots. final result could trigger a runoff or a court appeal under the new charter.
