Lodge In Democratic Lewiston Stronghold Rally Draws

Lewiston AP Henry Cabot Lodge spoke in City Park amid a Democratic stronghold rally 12 hours after Kennedy addressed the crowd. Lodge claimed Eisenhower backed a United Nations Congo force to spare Maine youths from service in 1960. Police estimated 5,000 in attendance, smaller than Kennedy’s gathering, as the event wrapped with cheers and a continuation note.

Three Children Believed Dead In Maine Home Fire

In Livermore Falls a family tragedy unfolds as three small Bailey children are reported missing and presumed dead after a one story home fire. Leroy Bailey and a brother escaped via window. Ella Bailey was with relatives. The other twin was badly burned and hospitalized. cause is undetermined. Nearby Rumford saw a similar fatal attic fire two days earlier.

St Ours enters bid for Ward council seat on Warner ticket

Roland St Ours of 17 Manual Avenue today announced candidacy for the Democratic nomination for councilman from Ward on the Warner slate. He cites bloc support and a desire to bring major industries to Biddeford, criticizing the current administration's three-year record and tax increases. St Ours, a lifelong Democrat, is married with four daughters, a St Andre church communicant, and works at Saco-Lowell shops with Local 49% AFI-CIO membership.

Saco Man In Court On Gun Charge

Roland M. Cross of Saco faced a negligent shooting charge while pursuing game. His case was continued to November 16 in Saco Municipal Court by Associate Judge William F. Wilson Jr. Deputy Sheriff Burleigh Richards Jr. signed the warrant after investigating a hunting accident in North Saco Saturday morning involving 33-year-old Vinton Abbott.

Saco AMVETS post joined Owen-Davis American Legion in protest of Biddeford Saco area merchants open on November 11 Veterans Day. Commander Joseph Stirling condemned the practice as unpatriotic and urged honoring the day set by Congress for veterans. Fat Clappison of Boucouvalas-Dupuis Post signed a letter calling for merchants to close on Veterans Day.

In Lewiston the crowd of 8,000 to 10,000, braving near freezing conditions after a 32 hour wait, welcomed Sen. John F. Kennedy just before midnight.
