Villa workers walk out at Good Shepherd Villa Nursing Home

In Biddeford second shift orderlies and nurses aides walked out after demands for a $2.30 hourly raise and more staff were not met. About 13 workers quit by 3:30 pm. five remained. They complained of understaffing and unmet state requirements affecting patients.

No Hike In Biddeford Tax Approved Budget

Biddeford approves a 6.618 million municipal budget with no expected tax rate increase. Mayor Dutremble says the 23 mill rate will likely stay unchanged from 1974, with revenue sharing not touched as the budget passes its second reading.

Laotians Release Marines End Occupation in Vientiane

Student demonstrators freed two U S Marines and an American civilian after ending the week long occupation of the U S AID compound in Vientiane. An agreement led to the shutdown of the AID mission by June 30 and a payback of the Laotian AID staff. The released Marines were Donald E Wilburn and Roger Murphy and the civilian was William Dar Darden.

Washington hotel injury yields record $7 million verdict

A federal court jury awarded Thomas Hooks of Venice Illinois seven million dollars in a personal injury case against the Washington Sheraton Corp and ITT Sheraton. Hooks was paralyzed in a 1971 hotel pool diving accident at the Sheraton Park Hotel during an Explorer Scout convention. He spent months in hospitals and is now a quadriplegic in a wheelchair.

Energy Tariffs Expected To Raise Gasoline Prices

The Ford administration projects a 19 cent per 100 dollar impact from its oil tariff on the average consumer. Gasoline and fuel oil costs would rise modestly, with ripple effects across petroleum based goods. The Federal Energy Administration cites a 1.4 cent per gallon rise from an earlier tariff and an estimated 1.5 cent per gallon addition from the latest.

Denial of Norton and Cole Pay by York County Council

York County officials will not pay administrative aide Kenneth Norton or lawyer Roland Cole for services Jan 1 to May 1 after House and Senate vote against reimbursement. Rep. Robert Farley said committee opinion held hiring without delegation approval improper, though delegation prior sought payment. Dispute over funding and authority between commissioners and the 21 member delegation has stretched into budget talks.
