Sludge as Temporary Cover at Old Orchard Beach Dump
OLD ORCHARD BEACH DEP official Ronald Howes discussed sludge use as a temporary cover for the old Smithwheel Road dump. He proposed using secondary treated sludge to grow vegetation after closure, while noting the need for a DEP approved disposal site and possible variances for regulations. The town plans to seek a federal waiver to proceed with part of the project, and DEP approved Scarborough commercial sites for septic sludge disposal as alternatives.
