York AAUW elects officers and awards Edith Abbott scholarship

The York County branch of the American Association of University Women held its annual meeting at Spicer's Galley Kennebunkport to elect officers and present the Edith K Abbott scholarship. In the upper photo new leaders include Mrs Kenneth Burr recording secretary Mrs Thomas Moore president and Mrs George Love vice president back row Mrs Joseph Truman treasurer and Mrs Harold W Stevens corresponding secretary. Church Too Rigid, Methodists Told at Troy Conference

Theologian Dr. William R. Cannon says Methodism is rigid and inflexible and fails to serve changing needs. At the Troy Methodist Conference in Gloversville, Bishop Hazen G. Werner warns of diminishing scope for God. Transfers announced include Sabin to Troy from New Hampshire, Scandrel from Pittsburgh to Troy, Clark from Troy to Baltimore, Woit from Troy to Northeast Ohio, Teague to exchange positions with Viets in Glens Falls effective July 1.

Five climbers stranded on Mt McKinley face a critical rescue. a jet helicopter failed twice due to mechanical trouble after departing from a 10 000 foot base camp. An H21C helicopter and a C123 cargo plane were dispatched to aid the group including a seriously ill woman and four injured climbers.

Record-Smashing Atlas Missile Flight

CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP A U S Atlas missile flew 9 000 miles in 522 minutes to a target area in the southern Indian Ocean surpassing previous records. The nose cone landed 1 000 miles southeast of Cape Town and about 500 miles northeast of Prince Edward Islands. The Air Force said all test objectives were achieved.

Crew Rescued After Ship Sinks Off Gloucester

The fishing vessel Holy Name collided with an unidentified submerged object twelve miles offshore and sank almost immediately. The four-man crew escaped in a dory and were rescued by the fishing boat Anthony and Josephine nearby.

In Inglewood California barber Ely E Miller aged 81 says a flat-top haircut and a sidewalk fall forced his retirement. He hurt his shoulder and cannot raise his arm high enough to square off a flat top properly, Miller stated on Thursday.

Rockefeller Jr Will Gives 1500 Acres to Acadia Park

State Left 1500 Acres Bar Harbor. The will filed in New York leaves 1500 acres on Mount Desert Island to the government for Acadia National Park expansion. Rockefeller already donated much of the park and built the Cadillac Mountain road. Estate valued around 150 million dollars. Most goes to his widow and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. the Mount Desert land excludes the 113 room Seal Harbor estate. The Eyrie will go to Mrs Rockefeller's trust.

Catholics face teacher shortage in Catholic grade schools

Washington AP reports Roman Catholic education nationwide faces a teacher shortage as 76 011 teaching sisters remain on grade school staffs in 1959. Lay teachers rose from 4.6 percent in 1945 to 29 percent in 1959, with projections showing lay teachers could surpass religious teachers by 1971. The NCWC Education Department notes growth makes Catholic schools the largest private system, while urging calm among secular critics.

Baccalaureate Services Abolished At Kennebunk

Kennebunk school committee voted to abolish baccalaureate services at Kennebunk High School. Superintendent John J Seekins and Principal Andrew L Peterson believed the ceremony lacked merit after moving from a church to the gym in 1958. Leo Martin was appointed principal of Park Street School, to begin in September.

Girl Hurt As Car Hits House In Chesholm

A 13 year old girl sleeping in her bedroom was cut by flying glass when a car crashed into the Savage home police said Morrill 19 swerved to avoid a dog and the car with Snow of Livermore Falls struck a fence jumped the sidewalk and hit the porch Linda Savage suffered cuts on both arms and shock Morrill was unhurt.

Area residents who must take exams for an operator's license may soon be tested in Biddeford. City Clerk Binette said a transfer of the license office from Kennebunk to Biddeford was decided yesterday in a conference with Charles.
