In Lisbon Eisenhower urged, We must tighten our belts keep our chins up and work harder for peace with justice and freedom after the summit’s wreck. In East Berlin Khrushchev pledged peaceful coexistence and said talks with Ulbricht and Grotewohl would advance peace in Europe amid U2 tensions.

KC Group Elects Officers At Beach Meeting

Rev James J Mullen council Knights of Columbus held elections at Old Orchard Beach K of C hall naming President Mrs Charles Sherman Vice President Mrs Adele Grenier Treasurer Mrs Alcide Bolduc Secretary Mrs Walter Coreau Guard Mrs Willy Tousignant Custodian Mrs Edgar Levecque and Chaplain Rev Armand Landry. Officers were accepted for fall installation. A mystery prize went to Mrs Edger Deprevy and attendance prize to Mrs Ida Robichuild. A banquet report from Marshview Scarborough listed attendees including Mrs Edgar Levecque Mrs Walter Coteau Miss Vivian Robichaud Mrs Adele Grenier and others.

Resignation Sought of Federal Drug Official Over Outside Earnings

Washington authorities demanded the resignation of Henry Welch head of the FDA antibiotics division after investigators showed he received 287 242 40 since 1953 mostly from reprints used to promote drug products. Flemming cited deliberate misrepresentation and asked Welch to resign. Senate probes focus on drug pricing practices.

Unitarian Church of Saco elects officers at annual meeting

The Second Parish Unitarian Church in Saco held its annual meeting electing Robert Fenderson as president again and Charles Fenderson as treasurer. Leon Libby became vice president. Mrs. Ernest Pendleton, secretary. Mrs. George Harrison, collector. Delegates to the Maine conference include Warren Harmon and Robert Fenderson. The Biddeford Saco Council of Churches will include Fenderson, Eleanor Shaffer, Bruce Shaffer, and Rev. Edmund Beal. Mrs. G. Frank Twambley joins the board of trustees. Unitarian Universalist Planning Council members re elected include Fenderson, Lillian Chapin, Sara Emmons, Libby, and Fenderson. alternates are Howard Shaffer, Foster Leavitt Jr., and Mrs. Eugene Hill. The moderator is Fenderson. A supper preceded the meeting. Miss Chapin led as supper chair with the Social Circle. The Circle voted to send a youth delegate to the Liberal Religious Youth Star Island Conference June 25 to July 2.

The Saco Osteopathic hospital corporation held its annual meeting and elected officers for 1960 61 at Valle’s steak house in Scarborough. Officers include Dana Rowe president and Richard Pfeiffer clerk with John Roberts as vice president and Jean Servais as medical director.

Methodists Face Call for New Leadership at Conference

The Troy Conference of the Methodist Church opened its five day sessions in Gloversville with Bishop Frederick B Newell and Dr Paul Mayes challenging ministers and congregations to adopt a new leadership style for a changing world They urged stronger Methodist indoctrination and warned against seminary trends toward teaching over preaching The conference covers northeastern New York Vermont and seven western Massachusetts churches with four districts Albany Troy Glens Falls and Burlington Vermont and hosts 730 ministers and delegates.

Bowdoin College Dean Urges Seniors to Honor Feeney

Bowdoin College president James S. Coles urged the senior class to dedicate their efforts to the late John P. Feeney of Saco during the final chapel gathering. Coles said the graduates should keep Feeney in mind as they face tasks and problems, aiming to do better in dedication to their departed classmate. Feeney died last week.

Skier Injured In Mt Washington Fall

A Pennsylvania skier, Eric Walgren 21 of Pittsburgh, fell about 15 feet into a crevasse on Mount Washington hill known as Hillman's Highway. He suffered critical skull fractures and cerebral contusions and was transferred from AMC shelter to St. Louis Hospital in Berlin New Hampshire and then Lewiston Maine for emergency care. Witnesses included hutmaster Robert Sullivan and USFS snow ranger Leavitt Bowie who aided the rescue.

American Unitarians In 135th Annual Meeting

Boston hosts the 135th annual meeting of the American Unitarian Association as delegates consider merging with the Universalist Church of America.
