The Parts and Makers of the Violin
The violin uses strings of wire or gut and a bow with horsehair or synthetic strands. Rosin rubbed on strings creates friction to produce sound. Antonio Stradivari, an Italian luthier, lived 1644 to 1737 and built over 1,500 instruments by hand, many still exist and are used by performers today.
