Hoffa Indicted in Taft-Hartley Case in Nashville

Teamsters Union President James Hoffa was indicted by a federal court jury in Nashville on two counts alleging violations of the Taft-Hartley Act and illicitly obtaining about $1 million through Commercial Carriers Inc. The indictment names Test Fleet Corp. and cites transfer of stock to Hoffa and Mrs. Brennan. Hoffa faces possible penalties up to one year in prison and $10,000 fines per count.

ARA Funds Misunderstood For Grafton Training Project

ARA funds approved for Grafton Lumber near Biddeford will not subsidize trainee salaries. Kenneth M. Curtis says the $15,000 was actually $1,500 and will fund an economic impact study for a separate $432,900 loan used to buy Saco Lowell Textile buildings and machinery. The study, by Surveys and Research Corp of Washington DC, will assess employment, payrolls, unemployment benefits, welfare costs, and new tax revenue.

Brooder House At Lyman Destroyed In Costly Fire

Lightning sparked two fires at Goodwins Mills this morning destroying a double story brooder house owned by Lawrence Taylor of Lyman. Eleven thousand brooders valued at 75 cents each were lost though most were saved. Firefighters from multiple towns battled both blazes about 11 miles apart.

Car Crashes After Chase Through Three Cities

Westbrook police report a high speed pursuit of an allegedly stolen car through South Portland and Portland ending in Westbrook where the vehicle crashed. A 16 year old youth was apprehended at the scene. another youth fled. John R. Seger, 21, of Westbrook, was later booked on two counts of larceny of a motor vehicle and awaits arraignment. A stolen vehicle had been seen near the telephone company office Friday evening.

Chum's Blow Kills Youth in California Fight

In Long Beach California a fist fight between Jan Samel 16 and Terry Walls 16 ended with Jan dying from a stomach punch. Police say the altercation began after a ball hit Terry. The coroner notes Jan had a congenital heart defect that could cause sudden death. Flowers 43, the foster father, recalls family heart issues and the boys’ close friendship.

Frogs Set For Derby On Sunday

In Angels Camp California the Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee returns for its 17th year with entrants from Africa Spain and many U S states. Each frog has three leaps. the top prize is 1000 if the world record of 16 feet 10 inches is tied or beaten, otherwise 300 for the winner. Buckshot will be barred from competitors.
