Biddeford Zoning Board Emphasizes Humanism in Variance Talks

Biddeford zoning board chair Bradford Jerome defends a humanistic approach while handling two variance requests one for an undersized lot and another for insufficient setbacks. He insists meetings are public and that decisions follow the strict letter of the zoning ordinance, balancing abutter concerns with the law. A rare poll was used to speed the Alfred Washington Street project amid abutter questions, and Jerome hints at resignation over outside pressures and ongoing law enforcement planning duties.

Saco Eyes Chappell Process Pilot for Waste Treatment

The city would join a one year EPA funded pilot using the Chappell Process to treat industrial and municipal wastes faster with less water. If approved, the $159,250 project would share costs among Saco, Chemlan Co, and three local firms, testing a method claimed to remove up to 90 percent of organics. City officials say success could unlock federal funds for full deployment and increased plant capacity. The council meets Wednesday at 7 p.m. to discuss the plan and nitrate pollution on Buxton Road.

Mayaguez seizure sparks questions over motives and war powers

U.S. officials weigh Cambodia’s motives after the Mayaguez was captured on the Cambodian coast. Reports say the vessel carried a $1 million cargo and was insured for $5 million with a $22 million replacement value. Cambodia could use the incident as leverage for aircraft from Phnom Penh’s air force, while U.S. legal experts state Cooper Church amendments and the 1973 War Powers Act may not apply. The ship was en route from Hong Kong to Thailand and was bound for Sattahip when seized.
