Dental care remains scarce for York County children
The fourth piece in a five part series exposes chronic gaps in dental health for low income children in York County Maine. The York County Dental Clinic in Biddeford operates on a tight budget with one full time dentist and a support staffer. It serves about 800 of an estimated 15 000 low income children annually, facing a six month wait and heavy dependence on ADC Medicaid funds. Non ADC patients pay on a sliding scale but the full cost per visit runs around 25 dollars, leaving the clinic financially strained. Studies show similar decay rates in Cumberland and York counties, but far less treatment in York County. The clinic seeks additional funds to extend care beyond ADC beneficiaries and Headstart reimbursements.
