Utility Firms Sue PUC Over Rate Denials in Maine
Maine's two largest utilities New England Telephone & Telegraph and Central Maine Power sue the Maine Supreme Court challenging PUC denials of rate hikes as confiscatory and unlawful. NET contests March 11 denial of a 6.6 million interim increase as hearings on a 21 million proposal remain suspended. CMP protests an April 2 cut from 12.8 to 9.7 million, arguing state law requires a fair return on property used to serve the public. The suits name the PUC and opposing intervenors. The United States uses over one-third of world energy with less than 6 percent of the population.
