Nuclear shelter advice at Hoover Dam prompts safety talk

Clark County civil defense officials urge residents anxious about a nuclear attack to use Hoover Dam for shelter. The 660 foot thick structure could hold at least 7,000 people and is located 31 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The dam is mainly for water storage, not power, so it is not viewed as a prime target. The note recalls Coronado’s 1540 expedition along the Rio Grande in search of the lost cities of Cibola.
