NEA Walkout Brings Contempt Citations In Montgomery County
A high ranking NEA official oversaw a Montgomery County walkout and was cited for contempt for violating a court injunction. After six days teachers won a base pay rise to 6340 from 5880 with a three day suspended jail sentence for the NEA field manager Gary Watts. The episode signals rising teacher militancy matched by the AFT in New York that secured higher pay scales, while Alonso forecasts hundreds more walkouts nationwide as salary and work conditions prompt action.
