Food Prices Drive February Inflation Surge in 1948

Washington AP reports February inflation rose 1.3 percent led by higher food and fuel costs, doubling figures not seen since 1948. Beef jumped 7.5 percent as overall CPI reached 141.5 versus 1967. real earnings fell 0.6 percent, down 4.5 percent from a year earlier.

Rochester mayor pursues referendum on refinery plan

Rochester New Hampshire Mayor John Shaw announced he will send a letter to council asking for a referendum question: Shall the city accept an oil refinery as part of its economy. If council supports, vote could occur by late April. Gibbs Oil and Shaheen Resources have shown interest, but no commitments exist.

Sostek vice president of Gibbs Oi Co. of Revere Mass told the Journal no plan exists to build Gibbs refinery in Rochester instead of Sanford He said the company remains committed to Sanford and has spent money to push construction there Heberg questions from an AP report followed Mayor Shaw at a press conference suggesting Rochester could be an option inclining toward a pipeline and no tank farm while Sanford remains the firm target.

Westland Shoe Plant Shuts Down Amid Uncertainty

Westland Shoe Corporation of Biddeford halted operations last Friday amid uncertain economic conditions. About 250 to 300 workers were employed before the decision to close, with plans to reassess and possibly reopen in a few months. Kidnap Attempt On Princess Anne Sparks London Court Hearing

Ian Ball a 26 year old unemployed Englishman was brought to Bow Street Magistrate's Court charged with attempted murder in an alleged kidnap bid against Princess Anne in central London. Beaton and another officer were seriously wounded as 11 shots were fired from two revolvers. Ball was overpowered by police near Buckingham Palace.
