Old York Belles Minstrels Ended In Alfred Incident

In 1869 Saco group known as the Old York Belles toured after Civil War, singing minstrel melodies on city squares and from William Littlefield's omnibuses. The troupe grew to Olympic Burlesque Company with adds like Hodgdon Goodwin Bascomb and Conley family. They faced a near disaster when a coach rolled on a Buxton trip, then continued fittingly. A printing error at Alfred led to a clash of blackface and whiteface acts, drawing railroad workers and local sheriffs as prohibition laws were ignored. The piece notes this as part of their era and hints at a continuation on Page 8.
