A 34 year old Boston woman with liver disease died after a radical therapy using porcine liver perfusion. Surgeries lasted 17 days and included five perfusions where a pig liver helped cleanse her blood while her own liver tried to recover. The patient showed periods of clarity but ultimately liver failure led to death. Developers noted artificial maintenance showed some promise for terminal cases, with 18 days survival the longest on record.
