Solar heat bill at rock bottom
Westbrook resident Paul Holloway is showcasing a 54 Bernadette St model home with a solar furnace that uses 1,864 cup like heat-collecting structures beneath glass to warm air circulated by a blower. The rock bed stores heat for off-sun periods, delivering up to 425,000 BTUs, though December and January run about 55 percent efficient. Holloway says the unit halves fuel bills and pays for itself in four to five years, though a backup electric heat is used when cloudy. The unit, bought from a Dryden Michigan factory for 2500 dollars, sits in a 26 by 48 foot home priced around 50,000 dollars, insulated heavily to reduce heating needs.
