Deserter Sentences and AWOL Trends Stir Pentagon Panel
The panel criticized varying sentences for AWOL linked deserters citing Sweden as a case. It noted a four month sentence for a man who had pledged return within six months, contrasted with harsher terms in similar cases. Laird defended disparities as inherent in unique cases and stated limits on negotiations and extradition. Pentagon data show 749 service members went AWOL to foreign countries since mid 1966, 174 to Sweden with about 50 returning. The subcommittee warned of underreported deserter cases via in absentia discharges, urging changes to reduce loopholes and align penalties.
