In Fall River Massachusetts AP reports a six ton elephant named Sid was deployed to quell a disturbance after a crowd of about 50 youths and circus workers clashed. The trainer rode Sid into the melee and the elephant helped disperse the crowd as workers dismantled the main tent.
Fresh 1500 South Vietnamese troops swept areas around the besieged Ben Het Special Forces camp to ease pressure. Viet Cong radio warned Ben Het’s doom and a significant Allied setback, as heavy rocket and mortar fire continued with five American artillerymen wounded and U.S. air and B52 strikes intensifying to cut off reinforcements from Laos.

The Mt Washington Cog Railway celebrates 100 years since Peppersass became the world’s first mountain locomotive. The line features steep grades, coal and water consumption, and a season of mid June to mid October drawing up to 53 000 riders.
