Maine Court Cuts Penalties in Driving Under Influence Case

Maine's driving under the influence penalties were slashed by a 5-0 state Supreme Court ruling, reducing fines from 1000 dollars and 11 months in jail to 300 dollars and 90 days, and cutting license suspensions from two years to three months. The ruling hinges on substituting the new driving while impaired law for the old statute, deeming them legally identical aside from penalties. Justice Webber notes possible legislative inadvertence as operation under the influence becomes a lesser offense than driving while intoxicated. Arthur J. Bryce Sr. of Edington faces charges under either label.
