Traffic violations dominated the Thursday docket in 10th District Court at Saco with numerous guilty pleas and fines. The list includes Walter Ronfeldt Jr of Rochester NH. George Cleaves of Jefferson. David DiPietro of Portland. Harold Prosser of Freeport. Maurice Morang of Saco. and many others with fines from 10 to 150 dollars, plus suspensions and bail pending appeal. Several speeding cases featured fines and varying speeds, and several other offenses included improper exhaust, no license, and traffic signal violations. The docket also notes offenses involving underage liquor possession and other public safety violations.
In 1968 Curtis sought 30000 dollars and got a lower amount as the legislature approved. Doyle challenged Curtis and the governor saying department heads were unfairly impacted by the cuts. He praised Hinckley’s department but faulted political pressure on its leader.
A diverse group of federal and state officials and Passamaquoddy leaders gathered to discuss tribal problems including housing and health programs. They debated whether treaties create tribal sovereignty and how state responsibility fits. The tribe seeks $150 million in a Massachusetts suit alleging treaty violations dating to the 18th century, with Maine implicated. Answers to a Massachusetts demurrer are due in July.
Washington AP report says Maine’s James V. Day was elected vice chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission. Day, a former national vice commander of the American Legion, joined the commission in 1962 under Kennedy and was reappointed in 1965 by Johnson, with Maine homes in Kennebunk and Ellsworth.
A surprise stork shower honored Mrs. Paul E. Beane formerly of North Carolina at sister in law Mrs. Bonnie Alley’s home on Lincoln Street Saco with assist ing hostess Mrs. Paula Mary. Yellow and white décor and a bassinet of gifts marked the event, with many local guests in attendance.
