Arecibo Observatory Radar Radio Telescope Overview
Atmospheric physicists astronomers and other qualified scientists study outer space using the 2.5 million watt transmitter and 1,000 foot reflector at the Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory. Conceived by Professor William E Gordon, it opened November 1 1963 as the world’s largest radar radio telescope. It operates three programs ionospheric studies planetary radar and radio astronomy observing day or night in all weather. The facility helps map ionospheric effects on weather and communications, determines planetary orbits and surface contours, and catalogs radio sources with over 3000 locations, revealing phenomena beyond visible light while listening vast distances into space.
