The jinx ship Pomona headed back to Honolulu after a fire in the engine room forced the new crew to abandon ship 100 miles southwest of Oahu. The Liberian freighter, en route to Formosa, carried 30 crew members who were rescued and later placed aboard the Pomona again as tug support arrived. The vessel’s past captain was killed with an ax in May, prompting the old crew’s refusal to sail.
