Saco Sets 1965 Tax Rate At 72 Per Thousand

The Saco Board of Assessors sets the 1965 tax rate at 72 mills on the $17,881,890 valuation, up from 68. The City Council approved $1,285,965 in appropriations, with a tax return of $1,287,496.08 and an overlay of $1,521.08.

Moon Race Tight as U S and USSR Chase First Landing

The United States and the Soviet Union remain in a tight race to reach the moon first with Gemini 4 and the Soviet Lunar flights. Astronauts James McDivitt and Edward White II advanced the U S lunar effort during a four day mission and White walked in space for 20 minutes.

Miss Ross Receives Presidential Scholastic Medal at White House

Miss Nancy J. Ross of Thornton Academy Saco Maine celebrated her 18th birthday by receiving a Presidential Scholar medal from President Johnson at a White House ceremony. Chester I Palmer Jr of Portland also earned a medal. Palmer’s parents shared a wedding anniversary on the same date. Johnson praised the scholars as tomorrow's leaders in American life.

New England Telephone Workers End Two Day Strike

A union led two day walkout by twelve thousand eight hundred fifty Toll line employees in five New England states ended after ten hours of talks. The dispute centered on the suspension of William K. Lewis Framingham office president. The union sought arbitration while the company preferred the normal grievance path. Federal mediator John F Sullivan and Rhode Island labor conciliator Earl E Greene helped reach a settlement with the National Labor Relations Board to review Lewis case. Company and non union staff kept service during the walkout.

Army Engineers To Build Base In Viet Nam

About 2,500 U.S. Army combat engineers landed at Cam Ranh Bay to build an airfield port and supply center. The joint U.S.-South Vietnamese project includes a bridge linking harbor to highway and railroad.
