Maine spends a low share of per capita income on education yet taxes remain high. The Maine Teachers Association released National Education Association figures showing Maine ranked 35th in per capita income spent on schools at 3.3 percent, with state and local taxes taking 9.7 percent of personal income. Maine also ranked 39th in average expenditure per pupil at $290, below the national $369. The report notes Maine has many school-age children relative to adults in productive years and a high 11.2 percent population over 65, worsening the tax burden on workers.

Home Fire Guts Five Rooms On Edwards Avenue Biddeford
Five room two story and a half house on Edwards avenue was gutted by an early morning fire that drew Biddeford Central fire crews, with $2500 estimated damage. The blaze started in an unfinished attic and spread to the ground floor as alarms and ambulance runs briefly diverted units. The Elwell family of Albert and three children escaped, while the property owner was James Quinn of Biddeford.
