Yankeeland Campground to Open After 32 Year Battle
West Kennebunk prepares to open the towns sole commercial campground on Old Alfred Road as Ronald Robinson expects about 100 of 203 campsites ready for mid June occupancy. The 30 acre site includes a clubhouse with recreation rooms, showers, store, laundromat, a 63 foot pool, and plans for a tennis court. The project stems from a long zoning fight that involved a building permit denial in 1972 and a Maine Supreme Court ruling upholding a prior decision. Residents initially opposed due to traffic and environmental concerns, though opposition has eased.

Bigelow backers dispute Longley plan on mountain land
Portland backers of Bigelow defend proposed purchase of Bigelow Mountain saying no new state money is needed. They attack Gov. Longley as misinformed, asserting the Department of Conservation supports the project and that the plan would protect the entire mountain for recreation and timber harvesting rather than only the summit for backpackers.
