Raytheon Bids For Big Space Project Contract
Raytheon chief Charles Francis Adams says the firm aims for a major space contract to lift New England electronics and supplier firms from a slump. The company trimmed staff from 44,000 to 35,000 and is closing a Lewiston Maine transistor plant. Adams expects a leaner Raytheon to grow, though no contract details are given. Scientists note meteorite studies aid reentry shield design for space vehicles.

Baby's First Word Becomes Archeology Term Potscherd
Edwardsville anthropologist T Patrick Culbert, 32, notes his son Christopher spoke the Mayan term potscherd meaning broken pottery. Culbert, an SIU Edwardsville professor, helps lead a seven year University of Pennsylvania Museum project at Tikal, Guatemala. He says pottery helps date Maya life from 1000 B.C. to about 900–1000 A.D. and that upper class may have been priestly. The site could yield clues to Maya civilization's abrupt end within 15 to 20 years.
