Low Wages Seen as Asset for York County Growth Plan
Hans Klunder Associates prepared Phase 2 master plan for Saco outlining low wages as a key asset for growth. The study notes 1 609 000 square feet of available industrial space to host about 3 700 workers, though demand may be lighter. It envisions incubator sites for cash constrained startups and stresses transportation links via Portland port and Boston highways, with travel to New York in under six hours possible within a decade. The economy rests on manufacturing with agriculture and related sectors employing under three percent, and industrial jobs accounting for 54.2 percent of unemployment in recent years.
