Nicholas Sampson named president by the coup leaders. Britain reports fighting in Nicosia and Limassol. The rebel radio pledges a government of national salvation and outlines aims to maintain Cyprus talks and foreign policy.
Archbishop Makarios, born Michael Mouskos in 1913, rose from monk to archbishop and then president of Cyprus guiding the island through the struggle for independence from Britain. His push for enosis with Greece sparked Turkish Cypriot opposition and ongoing sectarian strife.
In Washington two armed convicts refused a government offer and kept a siege in the U S District Court Cellblock as seven hostages had escaped 24 hours earlier after 68 hours in captivity. The pair Gorham Jr. and Robe rt N. Jones demanded a East Coast prison or “Lawrence Coast” and sought assurance they would not be separated. Negotiations continued through the night as food was supplied and a hostage elevator escape occurred.
AP reports Congress expects to approve a bill creating an independent government corporation to provide legal services to the poor. The measure, moved by compromise to win Nixon backing, would shift the program from the Office of Economic Opportunity to a 11-member Nixon-appointed board, with lingering risk of collapse before final passage. The same week, House and Senate action targets livestock loan guarantees up to 2 billion with a 350 thousand cap per borrower, and a Senate-approved strip mining bill with broader scope.
Reality Rep. Morris K. Udall of Arizona, the House bill's prime sponsor, conceded that the fee would be passed to consumers via higher electric bills.
A taxpayer received an IRS letter about expense accounts. The note adds humor by asking if they should review the return item by item or quit now, reflecting a light editorial tone.
