Alien mystery invades Wakefield reports in pond hole

In Wakefield New Hampshire residents reported an alien invasion vibe as a three foot pond hole appeared in Bill McCarthy’s farm pond. Mud and mayhem in Biddeford street wreck

In April 1890 heavy mud snarled Biddeford streets as John Stone of Kennebunkport toppled from a fraight wagon, his fallen body pinned by the vehicle. A calf tied at the back bleated as eggs splattered and nearby horse trouble spurred a second mishap. News notes continue on Page 8.

Maine budget notes conservative revenue estimates

Gov. James B. Longley’s biennial budget relies on conservative revenue projections, says Budget Officer Otto Siebert. Personal income tax and sales tax show modest increases, while lottery revenues are trimmed to about $2 million annually, with judges’ raises and university funding kept near current levels.

Weather turns grim as snows and ice halt river traffic

Relatively warm spell followed record lows as snow and freezing rain hit the Appalachians and mid Atlantic. Snow totals reached Delaware and Philadelphia, with NYC area receiving about two inches. New England faces five to ten inches inland, prompting cancellations. In the Midwest, ice froze 20 miles of the Mississippi between St. Louis and Cairo, halting towboats and greatly reducing traffic to a quarter of normal.
