Portland Maine AP report says a Clark Memorial Methodist Church publication urged parishioners to contact area legislators to defeat a bill allowing public transportation of private school pupils. The January issue of High Way identifies lawmakers and provides mailing addresses as a special session of the 99th Legislature weighs the measure after a Maine Supreme Court ruling.
National and state reports show traffic fatalities climbing over a three day New Year period. Delayed counts push deaths to 366, surpassing the 364 mark set in 1955 56. Officials caution the final four day total may not beat the 409 record from 1956 57.
Boston AP details that the Red Sox offered Ted Williams a TV and radio announcer post at his 1959 salary of 60,000. If he accepts, he would replace one of the three current Red Sox announcers. A Red Sox spokesman denied knowledge of the offer. Williams has not indicated his decision.
Chicago group SAPS or Society for the Appreciation and Preservation of Spouses wants seven full days in February as National Spouse Week. Founders like Margaret Jane Fink say mothers deserve more than one day while husbands take over all chores for a week.
Partly cloudy and cooler weather followed a wind driven rain storm that washed away much of southern Maine’s heavy snow cover. Lewiston recorded the heaviest rainfall at 1.69 inches while overall southern Maine saw just over an inch. The storm helped snow removal crews reduce a large part of last week’s foot or more of snow clogging roads.
French novelist and Nobel laureate Albert Camus died in an automobile crash in Sens France. The 46 year old writer known for existentialist works was killed instantly with no surviving passengers. Police reported a collision at a rural road junction and are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
An AP informant says a new steel labor agreement provides about a 39 cent hourly package raise over 30 months. Work rule language long contested is shelved for practical purposes, with a study committee to review but no binding power. The pact runs through June 30, 1962, and signals likely downstream steel price increases. The eight month dispute ended after Secretary Mitchell and Vice President Nixon mediated. The United Steelworkers Union and industry voluntarily accepted terms, with ratification by both sides forthcoming.
Greater Portland steel fabricators greeted the settlement of the steel strike with relief. Spokesmen said 35 to 45 million dollars in Maine construction jobs were at stake if the strike resumed on January 26. Projects included the Oxford Paper Co expansion at Rumford and the Fraser Paper Co project at Madawaska on the Canadian border.
Mrs Antonio Boisvert of Old Orchard Beach resigns as organist and choir director of St Margaret church effective December 31 after 25 years as permanent appointee plus five years as summer organist. Her career spans 1930 to 1960 under two priests. a farewell service featured guest artists from Portland Biddeford and Saco.
Anti-Semitic outbursts spread from West Germany to the United States and other places as swastikas and anti Jewish slogans were painted on synagogues, homes, and public buildings. Jewish and government leaders voiced alarm over the flare up now in its 12th day while some called it hooliganism and others warned of a possible resurgence of fascism. In New York City three Jewish houses of worship, including Temple Emanuel, were smeared. Rabbis balanced concern with expectation of a temporary spike.
Fresh from a Europe Asia Africa swing, President Eisenhower is expected to visit Buenos Aires late next month as part of a four nation Latin American tour. Argentine Foreign Minister Tadaba says he will arrive Feb 24 or 25 for a two day stay, following talks with President Frondizi.
