A Lake Arrowhead estates representative from Saco and the hearings presiding officer issued a written statement arguing the development is not intensive residential use under the Act. They cited 75 cottages on 334 acres, dense forest, and its proposed inclusion as a planned development in a general development district.
A Saco Maine nitrate scare follows tests showing 13 parts per million in the Bucci well, above the 10 ppm limit. Neighbors Campbell and Buxton Road residents also report contamination and seek city action. Officials debate sources, with poultry farm or septic tanks named. city says civil action may be needed if a source is proven.
Consumer prices climbed six tenths of a percent in January led by food costs especially cereals and bakery products and fruits and vegetables. The CPI stood at 156.1 percent of the 1967 average with the year over year rise at 11.7 percent.
The AFL-CIO warns of a deepening slump with an alarming drop in industrial output and business investment. It cites a massive loss of purchasing power and a need for about 60 billion dollars in annual after-tax personal income to return to prerecession levels. The statement notes near record high long term loan rates despite some Fed policy shifts.
Three close Nixon aides John Mitchell H R Haldeman and John Ehrlichman were sentenced to 2 to 8 years in prison for conspiring to obstruct justice and perjury. Robert Mardian got 10 months to three years. Ehrlichman sought non prison work with New Mexico pueblos, while supporters argued for leniency as the cases head to appeal.
A Maine recall bid for Old Orchard Beach councilors faces a Supreme Court justice today as Portland attorney Paul Frinske and Town Counsel Edward Gaulin plan to discuss setting a recall election date. The council had until Feb. 9 to act, but has taken no action since Feb. 6 amid disputes, with ballot timing and warrants to be drawn after court guidance.
