In May 1893 John L. Sullivan provoked a fight with Biddeford attorney Max L. Lizotte on a crowded Pullman. Lizotte’s backers reportedly paid $1,200 to secure Sullivan's release. The altercation unfolded as Sullivan and his touring troupe rode toward Bangor, with friends and bystanders watching a brutal grapple over a car seat and doorway.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission orders New England Telephone and Telegraph Co to refund with interest to some of its 330000 subscribers, cutting the July installed increase by 5 percent. NET intends to appeal and seeks further rate cuts, while the commission also trims installation fees and intrastate long distance base periods.
Cumberland Farms seeks a permanent injunction against Maine Milk Commission price increases after Superior Court denied a preliminary injunction. Judge Glassman found no irreparable harm but ruled the commission acted illegally by not conducting required cost investigations. Next hearing likely next month. Prices rose 13 cents to 1.67 per gallon, eight cents per half gallon, and three cents per quart.
