Eisenhower backs youth in GOP moves across states

Former president Dwight D. Eisenhower told Republicans he will not campaign for “gray-haired old men” and urged young candidates for governor and Senate and House seats. He pressed Sen. Hugh Scott to run for Pennsylvania governor while noting opposition to Woodside and Van Zandt ticket. He clarified remarks to Van Zandt as not personal. West Likely to Reject Khrushchev Disarmament Summit Proposal

Washington reports Khrushchev urged an 18 nation disarmament conference to meet in Geneva in mid March. The United States and allies appear set to reject the plan, while a late session of talks is deemed possible. The U S Weather Bureau in Portland forecasts a temporary break in statewide cold. Morning readings fell to 14 below at Old Town with other cold spots at Lewiston minus 10 and Millinocket Cari bou and Rumford minus 9. Portland reported one above while the airport showed 8 below.
