The Associated Press reports skies clearing and temperatures dropping as Midwest road crews clear snow-laden highways after a major storm. Isolated towns remain cut off. Wisconsin and northwestern Illinois face slowed travel due to stalled cars and drifts. Offshore, a 400 mile snow belt was noted in Texas, with flurries in central Rockies and showers in south central Texas. Windy, cold conditions persist in the region and Atlantic states, with record highs in Newark and Windsor Locks, and Atlantic Coast readings dipping after a warm spell.

President Eisenhower paints Lincoln portrait for Japan

In Tokyo President Eisenhower presented Japan with a portrait he painted of Abraham Lincoln. U S Ambassador Douglas MacArthur II delivered the painting to Ichiro Kiyose speaker of the House, in ceremonies with Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi attending. In Rabat Morocco four U S military installations will close and three squadrons will transfer by the end of June as part of a plan to close down all bases.
