The House voted 211 to 73 to end debate on the civil rights bill and push toward a final roll call. Southern opposition forced amendments expanding discrimination by sex and exempting religious schools, while a proposed age discrimination provision was defeated 123 to 94 amid tension over employment equality.

Six Black students had attended Shorter since last Wednesday, but none attempted to enter Notasulga when it reopened after a two day shutdown.
Senator Margaret Chase Smith began her bid for the Republican presidential nomination in northern New Hampshire amid 28 degree below zero conditions. She planned a seven day slate of handshaking tours through at least 24 communities starting in Pittsburg and moving toward Concord, aiming to position the first woman major party candidate for president. Her ballot entry for the March 10 primary places her among Goldwater Rockefeller Stassen LePage and others.
