York county politics enter a quiet spell as aspirants wait for the top ticket. Democrats weigh Congressman Frank M. Coffin of Lewiston running for governor or seeking another term, while State Rep Lucia Cormier of Rumford may run for the Senate seat held by Margaret Chase Smith.
President Eisenhower arrived in Cape Canaveral Florida for a personal inspection tour of the missile test center. He touched down at 10 26 a m EST after departing Andrews Air Force Base near Washington and planned a three to four hour stay before returning to the capital. The trip followed a stay at a farm near Gettysburg Page and included a flight from Andrews with a security escort and high level aides.
Berkshire-Hathaway Inc reports rising sales and profits with full capacity use and strong prospects for the year. For the quarter ended Jan 2 sales reach 17,747,422 with net earnings 1,249,276 or 65 cents a share, compared to a loss of 174,247 a year earlier. The board declares a 25 cent quarterly dividend March 1 to holders of record Feb 19.
A plan for a full time social worker to aid Biddeford and Saco area residents with marital health legal aid and family counseling is under discussion. Rev Birger T Johnson and Mayor Charles R Cote led talks while the AAUW plans a survey to assess need and space finances and details. No final decision before survey results.
About 30 Biddeford High School pupils were absent today due to a mild scarlatina epidemic lasting about three days. Principal Raymond A. Kenneally noted normal absenteeism otherwise. In Saco, school coordinator Carleton Robbins said illness absenteeism is below February’s average.
Alojzije Cardinal Stepinac, 61, spiritual leader of seven million Yugoslav Catholics and a symbol of church resistance to communism, died in Krasic. He had been imprisoned after World War II for alleged Nazi collaboration and spent years in confinement before his conditional release in 1951.
Room mothers under Mrs Albert Desrochers Jr arrange a Valentine party for 2 p m Friday at Bonython school with refreshments and student Valentines. They will also handle refreshments for the Feb 16 P T A meeting at Burns cafeteria where George Love will speak.
In New Gloucester five-year-old Ross Gouthro found a .32 revolver with one bullet. He climbed into a crib with his sleeping two-year-old brother Jonathan, and the gun fired, killing him. State Trooper Camile Carrier said Ross reached the weapon on a closet shelf while the mother slept. the father was away at work and could not be reached.
A Dutch radio operator Willem Van Rie stands trial at Suffolk Superior Court for the shipboard slaying of Lynn Kauffman. The 31 year old Utrecht native smiles for photographers as he enters court, asserting his innocence. Prosecutors allege a 44 day romance aboard the Utrecht led to her death. Van Rie admits no affair or murder.
