Saco Health Group Elects Officers and Appoints Committees

Saco Public Health Nursing committee met Monday afternoon to elect officers and appoint yearlong committees. Officers: Mrs Arthur Corriveau chairwoman, Mrs Gene Palmer vice chairwoman, Mrs Nicholas Scontras treasurer, Mrs Robert La Fond secretary. Committees include budget chair Mrs J Ralph Larochelle, nursing chair Mrs Lloyd Walker, clinic chair Mrs Stephen Polackwich, publicity chair Mrs Charles W Fender son, car committee chair Miss Marion Lowell, supplies unit chair Mrs Paul Chadbourne, welfare chair Mrs Charles W Fender son, education chair Mrs Warren Peterson, Community Chest chair Mrs Perley Ladd, and nominating chair Mrs Richard Murphy. Saco Sees More Than a Dozen New Businesses Open in 1959

In 1959 Saco’s industrial expansion accelerated with more than a dozen new businesses starting up. Allied-Saco Footwear expands into the Saco-Lowell buildings, employing 200 to 300 with potential to top 1,000, while Saco Tanning begins partial operations on Factory Island and later bows to city leadership with initial hides sent to Biddeford and Saco.

BOSTON AP The Georgia editor of a Baptist publication warns public taxes for sectarian schools would erode the public school system. Dr John J Hurt of The Christian Index says education would become a political football under such a system. Landry Ends Memorial Field Duty in Biddeford

Wilfrid Landry of Biddeford resigns as treasurer of the Biddeford War Memorial Field Committee after 16 years in the post. The resignation was accepted with regret and a vote of thanks was offered by City Clerk Ralph Binette, with Mayor Clem Deschambault represented. Leonard Drapeau was elected to succeed him and will be presented at the next meeting.

Huge Lien Faces Maine Contractor Cianchette

The Internal Revenue Service filed a lien over 1.1 million dollars against Maine contractor Joseph R. Cianchette and his wife Whitney L. Wheeler noted the sum covers income taxes for 1956 to 1958. Wheeler said the lien is routine and that the Cianchettes have options to appeal in Tax Court or sue to recover payment in District Court.

St Andre High project to start in 1963 biddeford parish

Work on a new St Andre High in St. Andre parish Biddeford may begin in 1963 due to a diocesan bonded debt. In interim, committees of St Andre Parents Friends and Teachers Association will improve current facilities. A redecorating drive for classrooms will begin during spring vacation.

Justice Edward P Murray of the Maine Supreme Court dismissed the writ of mandamus allowing Colby to return to school immediately. Meany Slams Powell as Powell Set for Labor Panel

Meany labeled Rep Adam Clayton Powell a terrible person to head the House Labor and Education Committee as Powell nears chairmanship next year. AFL-CIO officials fear Meany's criticism could harden Negro workers' attitudes toward the union and hinder labor's legislative aims amid Powell's pending leadership succession. Powell did not comment. AFL-CIO colleagues offered no immediate reply.

Ike Seeks Solution To Wheat Issue
