First lunar pilot is Kennebunk native Fred Hermann

Fred Hermann of Kennebunk, a 1966 graduate of the University of Maine, is identified as the first to qualify for a lunar landing by completing 50 simulated moon landings with the lunar module. A Grumman LM test pilot and one of 15 NASA company astronauts, he spent 25 years in the Marine Corps and NASA, now semi-retired and running a family jewelry business in Melrose, Massachusetts.
