Unemployment Near Five Million Mark in January 1959

Instrument Panel Scrutiny in Air Crash Probe

Investigators renewed examination of the American Airlines cockpit panel after the East River crash that killed 65. The nose and cockpit were recovered, a clock on the panel still ran, and the pilot Captain Alfred De Witt was identified among recovered bodies along with Dr. Robert Emerson and two others. Seventy-two people died in the disaster with 32 still missing.

Thief Steals 400000 In Jewelry From Miami Beach Suite

A professional thief stole an estimated 400000 in diamonds emeralds and other gems from a hotel suite belonging to Leon C Greenebaum chairman of Hertz Car Rental Corp his wife and Mrs Arthur Cole in Miami Beach The largest piece was a 180000 ring and several pieces were left behind The heist occurred as the party stayed at the Americana Hotel and left Sunday for New York with jewelry insured and still missing parts.

Pepperell union plans 10 percent wage rise after contract lapse

Pepperell Manufacturing will be formally notified this week that the union seeks to terminate its contract and negotiate a 10 percent wage increase. The May to April expiration drives talks under Taft Hartley with local wage discussions to be set by a national policy committee. Maine members Denis Blais and Michael Schoonjans lead the push as delegates aim for early negotiations.
