Washington economists say unemployment is nearing five million, with January 1959 figures likely close to that level. They note winter weather and cautious hiring slow the job market, as 1 in 17 able-bodied workers seeks work. Continued on Page Eight.
Investigators renewed examination of the American Airlines cockpit panel after the East River crash that killed 65. The nose and cockpit were recovered, a clock on the panel still ran, and the pilot Captain Alfred De Witt was identified among recovered bodies along with Dr. Robert Emerson and two others. Seventy-two people died in the disaster with 32 still missing.

Pepperell Manufacturing will be formally notified this week that the union seeks to terminate its contract and negotiate a 10 percent wage increase. The May to April expiration drives talks under Taft Hartley with local wage discussions to be set by a national policy committee. Richard A. Brine Jr. 27, of Denmark, starts a mandatory life term at Maine State Prison for the murder of a Portland cab driver. A Superior Court jury found him guilty Saturday. he is eligible for parole after serving time.
