Maine Education Chief Rules Funds Fall Short for New School

The Maine education commissioner stated that with $250,000 available this year only practical nursing can be taught at a new Presque Isle vocational school, unless the next legislature approves more funds. Rep. Hinds argues funds should go to MVTI in his area, noting 400 applicants were turned away last fall, while Hill emphasizes the value of Presque Isle property for a regional vocational facility. The department sought about $1 million in 1961 to establish a northeastern school.

Worthing backs revaluation for Saco last night

Mayor Dinsmore Worthing urged a complete revaluation of Saco property before the Saco Businessmen’s Association. He argued the 1950 valuation based on 1940 data skews taxes, suggesting a realistic revaluation could lower taxes for some while shifting burden to others and even prompt service curtailments or department mergers.

Kennedy Urges Space Network Plan for Public Shares

President Kennedy urged Congress to create the Communications Satellite Corporation a public private venture to build a worldwide space network for radio and television. The plan calls for over 1 billion in voting stock issued to the public and to communications carriers with shares priced at not less than 1000 each. The act would govern satellite channels rental to telecom firms and other authorized groups, domestic and foreign, aiming for profits from space relay services amidst ongoing debates over ownership. Government officials warned of uncertain payoff timing and ownership questions.
