Saco petitions seek bus transport to Thornton Academy

Petitions from three of Saco's seven wards ask the city to provide bus transportation to the Thornton Academy following December rereferendum support for sending pupils to private schools. The council debated eligibility cutoffs, bus needs, and schedule synchronization with current routes, while a study committee was formed. A separate issue approved a $100,000 tax anticipation loan from Canal National Bank at 1.85 percent, and plans to address Maple Street water and sewage problems were set in motion along with taxi ordinance changes lowering fees to five dollars per cab.

Kennedy asks Congress for five year education aid program

President Kennedy urged Congress to enact a five year five point seven billion dollar federal education aid program excluding parochial schools. He argued it would be the maximum allowed by the Constitution and would fund loans grants and scholarships at all levels while prioritizing college construction science and illiteracy programs.

Biddeford approves 1962 Plymouth police cruiser bid

Biddeford City Council approved buying a 1962 heavy duty police cruiser from L C and L C Maling company after bid comparisons. Three fire commissioners were named to form the new Civil Service commission with terms of one to three years. The council eliminated weaker bids due to not meeting heavy duty specs and price, selecting the Maling bid at about 2 619.80 including a 1959 cruiser allowance, for a 230 horsepower car.

Beach Dog Petitions Stir City Officials Clash Over Ordinances

Petition signatures over 100 oppose three dogs owned by Mrs. Frank Benson of 752 Lafayette Street Saco prompting review by Saco Police and Municipal Court Mayor Dinsmore Worthing stated. Court rules cite 48 hour reporting for dog attacks and evidence-based actions while suggesting new ordinances to align with state law.

Goulet Elected Sacred Heart League President at St. Andre

Leone Goulet was elected and installed president of the Sacred Heart league of St. Andre parish. Officers include Rev. Edmund Hache chaplain Aime Des rosiers vice president Lucien Ruel past councilor Armand J. Grebin secretary Roland Beauchesne treasurer Joseph Le febvre financial secretary serving his 32nd term. Desrosiers welcomed the new slate and a membership drive was approved to fund a new Sacred Heart statue during church interior renovations. Father Hache urged activity and devotion.

DAV Elects Europeans Demonstrate Mercier As Against DeGaulle Plan

The Biddeford Saco Disabled American Veterans elected Armand Mercier commander at GAR Hall Saco with plans for installation in March and a February 19 session to outline duties. Officers include Roland Paquette Paul Lizotte Henry Gobeil and Gerard Boucher with past commanders on the exec board. A June convention at Old Orchard Beach was announced.
