Israeli military records say rockets from Lebanon struck three border settlements injuring none. Troops crossed into south Lebanon and kidnapped three civilians suspected of Palestinian guerrilla activity. December clashes along a 70 mile frontier reach twelve incidents with no Israeli casualties.
Sen. Henry M. Jackson of Washington says he will seek legislation to curb court ordered busing for desegregation. He unveiled the plan Monday and said he would introduce the bill when Congress reconvenes next year to end the busing controversy and renew focus on education.
Delta Airlines seeks 3.5 million in a federal suit accusing Logan International air traffic controllers of negligent and wrongful actions that led to the 1973 crash killing 89 people. Delta asks court to recover damages paid to families.
A secret government report from Congress’ General Accounting Office says theft and diversion of hundreds of tanks aircraft missiles and other weapons from U.S. readiness stocks harmed national preparedness. The audit notes transfers to Israel after the 1973 Middle East war and to Vietnam in the late Indochina era.

The U S Postal Service raises mailing costs effective Wednesday after a federal appeals court stay allows the increase. First class letters go to 13 cents for the first ounce, 11 cents each additional ounce. postcards to 9 cents. parcel post up 10.1 percent. second and third class rates up 22.1 and 23.9 percent respectively. The move comes despite prior court orders and is expected to widen the deficit, with potential service cuts including Saturday deliveries.
In Minneapolis US District Judge Earl R Lawson ruled the Rozelle Rule violated antitrust laws. The decision halts the NFL and its 26 teams from enforcing the rule though Lawson stayed enforcement pending appeal. The suit, led by John Mackey and 14 others, seeks freedom for players to sell services to the highest bidder. Rozelle Rule required one year beyond contract for free agency with compensation to the old team.

A 17 year old youth identified as Bouffard died after a sledding accident at May Field in Biddeford Monday night. Police and a medical examiner concluded exposure after the boy fell from a plastic sled onto hard packed snow. His brother Steven 13 and sister Brenda found him around 10 p.m. and alerted their father Raymond Bouffard. The father’s resuscitation efforts failed and the youth was taken to Webber Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The brother sustained a leg injury from a park bench. Survivors include his father, mother Claire and siblings.
Gov. James Longley’s picks for top state posts appear to face smooth hearings as Joseph N. Williams of Presque Isle attracts strong farm industry backing for agriculture chief, Ralph H. Gelder of Augusta testifies for regulation post, and Vinal O. Lock of Gardiner scheduled for marine resources post confirmation. Williams, 57, leads Agway’s potato and feed businesses, after Aaron Levine was rejected over conflict concerns.
Old Orchard Beach town manager Rita Belair has not worked at the town hall for a year as Jerome Plante serves in an acting capacity. A new year and a new town council will decide Belair status starting January 2, with ongoing questions about her dismissal.
