Weekend Fatality Toll Grips Nation During Holiday Travel

Pastor Harris resigns from South Portland church

The Rev. Wallace H. Harris longtime pastor of the First Congregational Church since 1951 resigns to take a pastorate in East Millinocket. Under his leadership church membership doubled to about 2000 making it the second largest Congregational parish in Maine. He will leave South Portland March 31 to serve the First Congregational Church in East Millinocket.

Saco council records dispute over ward 3 recount

In Saco the Democrats and Republicans clash over the ward 3 ballot recount. City Clerk Fender son is accused of withholding records from the Dec 22 council meeting while Ayotte reviews the legality of the denial vote. Incumbent Alderman Charles Gilpatric requested the recount after trailing Harold Waight by three votes, 275 to 272.

Biddeford Recount Underway in Mayor Race Fight

Biddeford officials began a 9 30 recount of municipal ballots under City Clerk Paul Brunelle for the mayoral contest between Democrat Leo Lemire and Republican John Xaphes. A recount team observed by Council President Henry Camire includes Alfred Des Roberts. Lemire’s and Xaphes’ attorneys attended. Unofficial Ward tallies favored Xaphes in Ward 3 and 6 while Lemire gained votes in Ward 8 and 6. final results pending.

Marines Slay 63 Viet Cong in Ground Skirmishes

In South Viet Nam U S Marines killed 63 Viet Cong in ground clashes after a brief Christmas truce near Da Nang. One Marine unit near Quang Ha No 1 killed 15, another near Quang Ha No 2 faced an attack by 75 Viet Cong with artillery and tanks.

Four Cuban Officers Seek Asylum in Osaka

Four Cuban officers and 46 year old jco Cobas Osos walked off the Aracelo Iglesias freighter in Osaka and requested asylum. They said they did not want to risk their lives aiding shipments of military equipment to Communist North Vietnam and accused Cuban ships of aiding Communist aggression. A Cuban Embassy spokesman in Tokyo labeled them traitors.

Two GIs Charged With Aiding Viet Cong

NAHA Okinawa AP The U S Army has charged two GIs Sgt George E Smith and Spec 4 Claude McClure with aiding the enemy during Viet Cong captivity The men captured in November 1963 near Saigon were released last November 27 and remain on Okinawa as investigators determine if they face court martial The two have defense counsel and their cases are under review for trial by court martial
